Graeme Macrae Burnet's latest novel, CASE STUDY, has been acquired by independent publisher Saraband in a hotly contested five-way auction. CASE STUDY will be the fourth of the author's novels to be published by the Salford-based press, including his 2015 Booker-shortlisted HIS BLOODY PROJECT.

Saraband’s MD Sara Hunt bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Isobel Dixon at Blake Friedmann Literary Agency, for an undisclosed sum. Michael Heyward of Text acquired ANZ rights, while Ellis Moore of Bolinda secured audio, also in a very competitive auction.

HIS BLOODY PROJECT has repeatedly been picked out as one of the outstanding novels of its decade and outsold the rest of the Booker shortlist in 2016. In his new book Burnet uses his playful ‘metafictional’ approach to present an enthralling, layered novel exploring 1960s psychiatry and society.

CASE STUDY consists of a series of notebooks apparently sent to the author in 2020 to aid his research into the forgotten 1960s psychotherapist Arthur Collins Braithwaite – a controversial contemporary of R.D. Laing. These notebooks reveal the story of a young woman convinced that Braithwaite is responsible for her sister’s suicide. Determined to get to the bottom of the charismatic therapist’s role in her sister’s death, she assumes an alter ego and presents herself as a client to him. And so begins a game of cat-and-mouse between therapist and patient, between author and reader, in a novel seething with secrets and teasing questions about the nature of identity itself.

Describing the novel as ‘complex, playful, clever, stylish and witty, complete with all of Graeme’s signature style and tricks, but also high-concept, with emotional depth, and utterly captivating’, Sara Hunt comments:

‘After an epic team effort with the creativity and hard work of my colleagues, I am over the moon that we’ve secured rights to this fantastic book. More than that, I can’t wait to resume our working relationship with Graeme, who is such a wonderful, warm, funny and talented person – a joy to work with in every way.’

She adds, ‘We are thrilled that Graeme has also agreed to be our Bookshop Champion for Bookshop Day on 3 October. He will be visiting bookshops either physically or virtually – as lockdown allows – to highlight the key role booksellers play in the lives of writers and readers.’

‘Graeme has been a prominent supporter of booksellers throughout his writing career. Next year, when CASE STUDY is launched, we’ll have some special surprises for booksellers (and, of course, readers) to look forward to.’

Graeme Macrae Burnet says: ‘I couldn’t be more delighted to be teaming up once again with the great teams at Saraband and Text. I was very gratified to receive a number of tremendous offers for the book, but Sara Hunt showed a passion and commitment to CASE STUDY that was simply irresistible. I can’t wait to get to work and look forward to seeing my new novel out in the world.’

Isobel Dixon says: ‘The battle for CASE STUDY was a truly extraordinary auction, for an extraordinary novel, all the bidders passionate about Graeme’s work. Saraband’s ingenuity and commitment was impressive and I’m delighted that Sara Hunt will be taking this forward, along with Michael Heyward of Text and Ellis Moore of Bolinda – strengthening old ties while breaking new ground with this brilliant book.’

CASE STUDY will be published in October 2021.

IT MUST BE LOVE is a will-they-won’t-they commercial women’s novel spanning fifteen years and six cities. Abbie and Oz first meet when they are students from very different backgrounds, and their connection is unmistakable. They drift apart when Oz moves back to Turkey, but Abbie can’t shake the feeling that Oz might have been ‘the one’. As the years pass, it seems unlikely that they will ever meet again but fortunately fate has other ideas… delicious in its delivery and utterly heart-warming, IT MUST BE LOVE is an ode to second chances that you simply won’t be able to put down.

Jennie Rothwell, editor, said: ‘The moment I read the first page I knew IT MUST BE LOVE was a book that I had to publish. I found myself on a rollercoaster of emotions as I raced to finish it and I was instantly drawn to the locations Caroline had chosen for Abbie and Oz. I am so excited to welcome Caroline to Arrow, and can’t wait for readers to fall in love with Abbie and Oz, and their story.’

Caroline Khoury, author, said: ‘It is a dream come true that IT MUST BE LOVE has found a home at Arrow and I’m honoured to be working with Jennie and the team. I really loved writing this story and I can’t wait for people to read it.’

Kate Burke, agent, said: ‘I'm delighted that Caroline has found such a great publishing home with Jennie and the Arrow team. Her life-affirming, romantic novels are a breath of fresh air and I can't wait to see them published!’

IT MUST BE LOVE will be published by Arrow Books in February 2022.

The SA Book Awards celebrates books written and published in South Africa, as voted for by South African booksellers. This year a record number of booksellers participated, voting in three categories (Adult Fiction, Adult Non-Fiction, and Children’s) from a shortlist of bestselling titles composed by Nielsen BookScan South Africa in 2019. The winners for each category will be revealed in a virtual ceremony on 1 October 2020, along with an overall winner who had the highest number of bookseller votes.

Zake Mda’s THE ZULUS OF NEW YORK was published in 2019 by UMUZI and has been described as ‘compelling and harrowing’ by Abdulrazak Gurnah, author of PARADISE. It is a heart-breaking love story, celebrating the ingenuity of the creative spirit in the face of injustice. Though short, it packs a punch, and is perhaps his best work yet. A film deal is currently under negotiation.

Praise for Sally Andrew and DEATH ON THE LIMPOPO

‘A vivid, amusing and immensely enjoyable read about detection (and cooking) in an intriguing part of southern Africa …. A triumph.’ – Alexander McCall Smith

sally andrew 2.png

'Take a pinch of Alexander McCall Smith, a dash of Diane Mott Davidson, and add a smidge of the wild veld and you’ll get a taste for this lekker story (that’s “delicious” in Afrikaans). While the tone is heartfelt, Andrew doesn’t shy away from the realities of spousal abuse or the shadow of South Africa’s tumultuous history. With a fascinating setting, engaging characters, and a full complement of drool-worthy recipes, this is sure to leave readers craving more.’ – Starred review, Library Journal

'With her cosy Tannie Maria mysteries, Sally Andrew adds some zest (and recipes) to a predominantly serious genre. Even though it might gravitate more towards mysteries than hardcore crime, it’s still worth a read for its humour and South Africanisms.' — Dey There, 12 South African Crime Writers to Add to Your Reading List

'There is a Thelma and Louise-type thread that runs through this brilliant novel... Andrew has delighted her fans with her first two books, but in this novel she raises her game considerably without losing any of the charm of the character of Maria. I can't wait to see what her next novel offers.' — Jennifer Crocker, Cape Times

Filming has commenced on brand new ITV crime drama, Grace, based on international bestselling author Peter James’ Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series. The series is written by acclaimed screenwriter and Endeavour creator, Russell Lewis.

Starring acclaimed actor John Simm as tenacious detective Roy Grace, Russell has adapted two of Peter James’ award winning novels which introduce the audience to Brighton based Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a hard-working police officer who has given his life to the job.

Co-produced by Second Act Productions, Tall Story Pictures and Vaudeville Productions, the 2 x 120 screenplays narrate the first two stories in the popular Roy Grace series, DEAD SIMPLE and LOOKING GOOD DEAD.

Joining John Simm, as filming commences in Brighton, are Richie Campbell (Liar, Blue Story, Top Boy) who takes the role of DS Glenn Branson and Rakie Ayola (Noughts + Crosses, Shetland, No Offence) as ACC Vosper.

DEAD SIMPLE Reissue cover.jpg

Laura Elphinstone (Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, Line of Duty) is DS Bella Moy, Amaka Okafor (The Split, Vera) plays DC Emma Jane Boutwood, and Brad Morrison (National Theatre Live; Twelfth Night) takes the role of DC Nicholl.

Rebecca Scrogs (Alex Rider, Flack, Scarborough) plays Branson’s wife Ari, Alexander Cobb (Doctors, Vera) plays Kevin Spinella and they are also joined by Adrian Rawlings (Chernobyl, Girlfriends, Innocent), Natasha Joseph (Get Even, Doctors, Sex Education), Tom Weston-Jones (Warrior, The Terror, Dickensian), Matt Stokoe (Cursed, Jamestown, Bodyguard), Alisha Bailey (Save Me, Chewing Gum) and Maggie O’Neill (White Lines, The Split, Shameless).

The first film, Dead Simple, opens with Grace running enquiries into long forgotten cold cases with little or no prospect of success. He’s fixated by the disappearance of his beloved wife, Sandy, which haunts his thoughts. His unorthodox police methods have come under scrutiny once again and Grace is walking a career tightrope and risks being moved from the job he loves most.

With so much at stake, his colleague Detective Sergeant Glenn Branson knows he has more to give and asks him for help with a case. When a stag night prank appears to go wrong and the groom goes missing, Branson calls upon Grace to unravel events that led to the mysterious disappearance three days before his wedding to his beautiful fiancé.

A successful property developer with everything to live for, there is no trace of the missing groom. Is this a case of stag night shenanigans gone badly awry? Or is this something more sinister?

With nothing but instinct, a lingering suspicion and his obsessive nature, Grace doggedly pursues the groom’s disappearance and becomes uneasily close to the bride to be…

Executive producers are Andrew O’Connor and Paul Sandler for Second Act Productions, Patrick Schweitzer for Tall Story Pictures, Michael Vine for Vaudeville Productions, and Russell Lewis and Peter James.  The first film, Dead Simple, is directed by John Alexander (Belgravia, Trust Me, Jamestown) with the second film, Looking Good Dead, directed by Julia Ford (Sticks and Stones, The Bay II, Safe).

LOOKING GOOD DEAD Reissue.jpg

Writer Russell Lewis is also known for his work on Morse, Lewis, Murphy’s Law, Sharpe’s Peril and Kavanagh QC.

Commented Russell Lewis:

‘I’m thrilled and honoured to be involved in bringing Peter James’ brilliantly gripping series of Roy Grace novels to ITV.  Each story is a fantastic, hair-raising, twisting, switch-back of a roller-coaster ride that grips the reader from first to last, and the opportunity to translate that best-selling magic to television is like all one’s Christmases and birthdays come at once. As his millions of fans and admirers are well aware, Peter's meticulous research and eye for detail is the stuff of legend.  His long established, close relationship with the police, taken together with a knowledge of Brighton and the South Coast that is the sole preserve of the born and bred lends his stories an unimpeachable veracity of place and procedure. That John Simm will be breathing flesh to the bones of Roy Grace really is the cherry on a dark, and troublingly encrimsoned cake…’

ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, and Drama Commissioner, Huw Kennair Jones have commissioned Grace for the channel. Huw will oversee production of the drama from the channel’s perspective.

Commented Peter James:

‘John Simm, who actually looks like the Roy Grace of my imagination, is inspired casting!  With John in the lead, the brilliant scripting by Russell Lewis, and our wonderful production team, I’m confident that fans of my novels and of TV crime dramas in general will be in for a treat.’

ITV Studios GD will be responsible for the international distribution of Grace.
