THE MERMAID OF BLACK CONCH by Monique Roffey Named Costa Book of the Year

We are delighted that THE MERMAID OF BLACK CONCH by Monique Roffey has been named Costa Book of the Year 2020. The Costa Book of the Year is chosen out of the winners of each category award, and this year was announced in an online ceremony featuring interviews with each category winner: Ingrid Persaud (First Novel Award), Lee Lawrence (Biography Award), Natasha Farrant (Children’s Book Award), late poet Eavan Boland’s publisher Michael Schmidt (Poetry Award), as well as Monique, winner of the Novel Award. 

Announcing Monique’s win, Chair of Judges Professor Suzannah Lipscomb described her novel as ‘a classic in the making, from a writer at the height of their powers’. Each of the judges also gave their view of the book. Stephen Mangan described it as ‘evocative’ and ‘beautifully written’. Angellica Bell said it ‘made [her] think’. Jill Dawson described the novel as a ‘bold, original, sexy book, speaking to so many important themes’. Simon Savidge said it provides ‘a perfect escape from the world’. Patrice Lawrence said: ‘it took me to the further reaches of my imagination’. Zaffar Kunial said the novel ‘seems to have created its own shape and energy in the universe’. Sadie Jones described the book as ‘surprising’ and ‘rich’. Horatio Clare said THE MERMAID OF BLACK CONCH was ‘a strange, chaotic and beautiful book, like life and myth in the best ways.’

Reporting on the win, BBC Arts Correspondent Rebecca Jones described THE MERMAID OF BLACK CONCH as ‘unusual’ but ‘also a joy to read, brimming with memorable characters and vivid descriptions. . . hugely entertaining and thought-provoking novel and a worthy winner.’ She added that ‘The Costa Book Awards have a reputation for picking popular reads: books you would recommend to a friend.’

ANTIEMETIC FOR HOMESICKNESS by Romalyn Ante and ALLIGATOR & OTHER STORIES by Dima Alzayat Longlisted for Dylan Thomas Prize 2021

We are thrilled that two Blake Friedmann authors have had their books longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize 2021: Dima Alzayat’s collection of stories, ALLIGATOR & OTHER STORIES, and Romalyn Ante’s poetry collection ANTIEMETIC FOR HOMESICKNESS. The longlist features 12 books drawn from all English-language fiction published across the world, and this year includes a record of nine debut writers.

The Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize was launched in 2006, to encourage raw creative talent worldwide and celebrate and nurture international literary excellence. One of the most prestigious awards for young writers, the £20,000 prize awarded to the best published literary work in the English language, written by an author aged 39 or under. Past winners include Bryan Washington, Guy Gunaratne, Kayo Chingonyi, Fiona McFarlane and Max Porter.

The shortlist will be announced 25th March and the winner will be revealed on 13th May, the eve of International Dylan Thomas Day.

ANTIEMETIC FOR HOMESICKNESS was published by Chatto & Windus in 2020.

Romalyn Ante grew up in the Philippines until she migrated to the UK when she was 16 years old. She is a West Midland-based poet and co-founding editor of harana poetry. She is also a poetry editor at Ambit magazine. Her debut pamphlet, Rice & Rain (V Press), received the 2018 Saboteur Award for Best Poetry Pamphlet. Apart from being a writer, she also works full-time as a specialist nurse practitioner. She is working on a memoir.

Romalyn will be participating in a Balangiga Press hotseat conversation on 20th February, and reading as part of the online Kendal Poetry Festival alongside Carolyn Forché on 24th February. She will also be reading in the Seren First Thursday on 4th March.

ALLIGATOR & OTHER STORIES was published in 2020 by Picador in the UK and by Two Dollar Radio in the US. It was also chosen as a finalist for the PEN America Robert W Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection.

Dima Alzayat was born in Damascus, Syria, grew up in San Jose, California, and now lives in Manchester. She was the winner of the ALCS Tom-Gallon Trust Award 2019, a 2018 Northern Writers’ Award, the 2017 Bristol Short Story Prize, the 2015 Bernice Slote Award, runner-up in the 2018 Deborah Rogers Award and the 2018 Zoetrope: All-Story Competition, and was Highly Commended in the 2013 Bridport Prize. She is a PhD student and associate lecturer at Lancaster University.

HONEY & SPICE by Bolu Babalola acquired by Headline in whirlwind pre-empt

We are thrilled that Headline have acquired Honey & Spice by rising star, Bolu Babalola, author of the Sunday Times bestselling Love in Colour, also a Waterstones Book of the Year. Katie Packer, Commissioning Editor at Headline, pre-empted the novel within a few hours of submission, and bought UK and Commonwealth and Translation rights for Honey & Spice and one more book from Juliet Pickering. US and Canadian rights in Honey & Spice were also pre-empted by William Morrow, in a significant six-figure deal.
