Biography: Dr Gianmarco Contino MD, PhD, is a leading clinician-scientist and internationally recognised expert in cancer genomics, working at the intersection of cancer genomics, surgery, and translational oncology. He is Associate Professor of Cancer Genomic Medicine at the University of Birmingham and a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham.

He trained in surgery, molecular oncology, and translational cancer research at the University of Cambridge, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Imperial College London. He is a Fellow of St Edmund’s College, Cambridge.

His work bridges laboratory research and clinical practice, linking advances in cancer genomics to the care of patients living with cancer. His research focuses on chromosomal instability and the genomic evolution of cancer, with programmes connected to Genomics England, UK Biobank, and international cancer genomics consortia.

Alongside his research and clinical work, he directs the MSc in Clinical Oncology at the University of Birmingham and speaks regularly to professional, scientific, and patient audiences on cancer biology and genomic medicine, including at events associated with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer. He is also a Research Fellow at the Von Hügel Institute, University of Cambridge, where he explores the philosophical and epistemological dimensions of medicine, genomics, and artificial intelligence.
