Leonie watkins
Agent: Leyla Hattabi
Born in East Anglia, Leonie is a screenwriter, playwright and director whose early career began in publishing and, later, broadcast TV, where she wrote and produced for channels including Adult Swim and TCM. As a keen motorcyclist of almost 30 years, Leonie spent her 20s and 30s documenting her adventures by journeying around the globe on two wheels, riding, racing and reporting for various bike magazines. Television continues to inform much of Leonie's writing. Her work for HETV and film focuses on the experiences of women, often reflecting the brutal reality of our lives. Leonie is interested in visceral, high-stakes dramas that can change perceptions, even shape the cultural zeitgeist.
The great-niece of one of the original Osiris Players, Leonie carries the legacy of Britain's pioneering all-female professional theatre company. Under the visionary leadership of Nancy Hewins, The Osiris Players, toured the country between 1924 and 1978 in two Rolls-Royce cars, which Nancy claimed were the only vehicles suitable for the task. Their mission was to make theatre, especially the works of Shakespeare, accessible to audiences who otherwise might never experience the magic of live performances.
Leonie lives in East Sussex with her husband Alex and their giant Pudelpointer, Iggy.
Leonie's work for theatre includes Just Stop! A play about estranged relationships, the pressures of activism and navigating its challenges and asks, how willing would most of us go in order to motivate change? Just Stop! was serialised on BBC Radio and on stage at The Cockpit Theatre in London.
Award-winning short film RABBIT EARS, a story about childhood grief and of letting go, was released onto the festival circuit in 2026.
