MCGOWAN - THE LOST UK cover.JPG

Claire McGowan’s Paula Maguire series THE LOST and THE DEAD GROUND have been optioned by BBC Drama Production as the basis for a returning TV series.

THE LOST follows forensic psychologist Paula Maguire as she investigates the disappearance of two girls along the Irish border. The case takes Paula back to her hometown where, surrounded by people and places she’d try to forget, she uncovers a link with two other disappearances from 1985.

The second book in the series, THE DEAD GROUND, will be published on 10th April. This time Paula is faced with a stolen baby, a murdered woman and a decades-old atrocity, with Paula caught up in the hunt, trying to find the link between these seemingly unconnected events.

Praise for Claire McGowan:

‘[THE LOST is] a terrifically assured and pulse-pounding novel; dark, sad, lyrical & full of superb twists.’

Stav Sherez, author of DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND

'Funny and perfectly paced, the pervading sense of "there but for the grace of God you go" chills you to the bone.'

Jake Kerridge, The Telegraph

'McGowan's first novel is a perceptive examination of the after-effects of murder... The characters are finely drawn, and it's conern for them, rather than for whodunnit, that provides the page-turning impetus in this promising debut.'

Laura Wilson, The Guardian

'McGowan writes utterly convincingly in three very different voices and she knows how to tell a cracking story. She will go far.'

Carla McKay, Mail Online

US Publication day for KNIGHTLEY & SON!

KIGHTLY & SON front cover.jpg

Rohan Gavin’s KNIGHTLEY & SON is published in the US by Bloomsbury today.

Darkus Knightley is not your average thirteen-year-old: ferociously logical, super-smart and with a fondness for tweed, detective work is in his blood. His dad Alan Knightley was London's top private investigator and an expert in crimes too strange for Scotland Yard to handle, but four years ago the unexplained finally caught up with him - and he fell into a mysterious coma. Darkus is determined to follow in his father's footsteps and find out what really happened. But when Alan suddenly wakes up, his memory is wonky and he needs help. The game is afoot for Knightley & Son – with a mystery that gets weirder by the minute, a bestselling book that makes its readers commit terrible crimes, and a sinister organisation known as the Combination . . .

Kirkus gave it a coveted starred review, saying: 'Heaps of mystery, dry humor and tweed abound in this exemplar of crime fiction à la Doyle... Darkus’ skill at deduction, perpetual observation and sang-froid are spot-on Holmes-ian… … A rousing page-turner with one fault: It ends.' New York Times bestselling author Chris Grabenstein offered this praise: ‘Danger and excitement – not to mention quirky characters and wonderful writing – lurk around every page!’

Rohan Gavin is a screenwriter and author based in London. He is the son of award-winning children's author Jamila Gavin, and recently became a father himself. His second novel KNIGHTLEY & SON: K-9 (featuring a plucky four-legged friend) is due for UK publication in August this year. He will be on author tour in the US in April.

Some praise for KNIGHTLEY & SON:

‘An engaging, characterful debut’ – Nicolette Jones, Sunday Times Pick of the Week
'This book surpasses all expectations... Any fan of Sherlock Holmes will find this book very appealing ... full of suspense, mystery and some very clever detective skills.' – Mr Ripley's Enchanted Books

'Just too good... a fun adventure story that the whole family should read... I hope there are more adventures to come' – Girl-who-reads.com

'In Darkus Knightley, author Rohan Gavin has created a protagonist that readers will grow to love... clever, action-packed and humorous adventures' –bookzone4boys

‘His first novel, owes much to the world of film – especially the non-stop, tongue-in-cheek movies that are aimed at a family audience – Indiana Jones and most recently, Sherlock. …  Action is high on the agenda … Aimed firmly at an audience who are steeped in Tintin and who have enjoyed The Diamond Brothers, this is a lively romp which will certainly please young readers.’ – Booksforkeeps

WATER MUSIC HoZ Uk Cover.jpg

Margie Orford’s thrilling South African crime series has a new UK home with Head of Zeus, who are kicking off on 27 February with the publication of WATER MUSIC in ebook and trade paperback. The first four Clare Hart titles are also available at the same time on ebook – LIKE CLOCKWORK, BLOOD ROSE, DADDY’S GIRL and GALLOW’S HILL.

The Clare Hart series has been published in France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Russia and the Czech Republic, and rights have also been sold in Denmark, Norway and Iceland. Harper Witness will publish in the US later this year.

In WATER MUSIC, a baby is found half-frozen but alive on a Cape Town hillside and a talented young cellist disappears from her music school. Clare Hart, with personal problems of her own, has a great deal to unravel, against the clock.

Margie Orford was interviewed on Open Book on BBC Radio 4 last week to talk about WATER MUSIC and South African crime writing. If you have access to BBC iPlayer you can listen to her here. She will be in the UK later this year to promote her new book.

Margie Orford, has been described as 'the Queen of South African Crime Fiction'. She was born in London and grew up in Namibia, the setting for BLOOD ROSE, the second novel in the series, which is also optioned for film. A Fulbright Scholar, she was educated in South Africa and the United States. She is Executive Vice-President of South African PEN, the patron of Rape Crisis and of the children's book charity, the Little Hands Trust. She lives in Cape Town.

Praise for Margie Orford and WATER MUSIC:

‘Margie Orford writes with great human insight, at times with poetic beauty, and always the ever-present deep, dark undertow of menace.’ – Peter James

'Orford plots so brilliantly that to stop reading is as harrowing as to carry on.' – Jake Kerridge, Daily Telegraph

‘Clare Hart is back, and she returns in style… the tension racks up, and up, and up… WATER MUSIC should see Orford win many, many more fans, and she’s not exactly short of them already. Read it.’ – The Big Issue

‘I loved the twists and turns of this book and the truly unknowable nature of the next chapter’ – Lizzi Thomasson, The Bookseller

‘Margie Orford gives genre writing swagger, she makes it look good…every detail in WATER MUSIC convinces. Every sentence is clipped, pared down, muscular, every emotion captured with poise and precision. WATER MUSIC is Orford’s best work yet.’ – Jonathan Amid, Slipnet
