ONE OF US IS DEAD by Peter James is a Number 1 bestseller in paperback

The paperback edition of ONE OF US IS DEAD, the twentieth book in Peter James’s internationally bestselling Roy Grace series, is a UK Number 1 bestseller – his 21st Number One.

Upon publication, ONE OF US IS DEAD went straight to Number 3 and now, after a full week of sales, it has reached Number 1 – a rise of 48.1%. The hardback edition was also a UK bestseller, hitting Number 3 in the charts when it was published in October last year. All the books in the Roy Grace series are published by Pan Macmillan in the UK and the US.

When James Taylor arrives late for a funeral, he has to stand at the back of the small church. But as the service progresses, Taylor notices a man six rows in front of him. At first he thinks he must be mistaken, but the more he looks at him, the more convinced Taylor becomes that this is his old schoolfriend, Rufus Rorke. Except it couldn’t be him, could it? Because two years ago, Taylor attended Rufus Rorke’s funeral. He even delivered Rufus’s eulogy...

On the other side of Brighton at Police HQ, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace has been alerted to a number of suspicious deaths that he can’t get out of his mind. But how are they linked? And how could they possibly be connected to Rufus Rorke? Roy Grace is about to find out just how dangerous a dead man can be...

In other exciting news, the fifth series of Grace returned to screens this month. It continues to dominate viewing figures, with the first episode (DEAD IF YOU DON’T)  achieving a consolidated 4.8 million viewers after only seven days. Episode 2 (DEAD AT FIRST SIGHT) reached even higher, with consolidated figures of 5.1 million. Both episodes surpassed ITV1’s slot average of 2.6 million viewers. Season Six begins shooting in Brighton very soon too!

Peter is working hard on the next pulse-pounding novel in the Roy Grace series which will be published in October, with more details coming soon.

Praise for ONE OF US IS DEAD

‘All hail the Queen’s favourite detective as the indefatigable Peter James returns with the 20th Roy Grace mystery (already).’ – The Times

‘Another just-one-more-page-thriller.’ – Anna Bonet, i newspaper, ‘The best new books to read in September 2024’

‘First the smash-hit TV series, now the 20th novel – Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is going flat out, sirens and all… a simple case spirals into a complex soup of ego and murder in this twisty page-turner.’ – Bill Todd, The Sun, Pick of the Week, 5-Star Review

‘DS Roy Grace returns in the twentieth gripping instalment in Peter James’ bestselling series, as links to a man supposedly dead and buried start cropping up in an ongoing investigation into a series of suspicious deaths.’ – Waterstones, ‘September’s Best Books’

‘ONE OF US IS DEAD is a fabulous thriller... Loads of twists and turns… a great holiday read.’ – Kym Argo, The Citizen

‘The long-time British mystery and procedural writer Peter James has done it again with his newest novel, ONE OF US IS DEAD. The book starts with James Taylor attending the funeral of a friend. But weirdly enough, he recognizes a man in the front row of the church, and this man also happens to be Taylor's friend. But Taylor eulogized his friend two years ago, so how can this be? That anomaly is enough for Detective Roy Grace of Brighton; his curiosity is peaked while, at the same time, he's working several homicides as any police detective does. A pattern develops, which is fascinating and delicately connects the deaths. Peter James is a solid procedure writer; I recommend ONE OF US IS DEAD. And I also suggest you check out his long and well-written backlist.’ – Great Mysteries & Thrillers

The shortlist will be announced on Thursday 29th May, with the winner revealed in a ceremony on the Thursday 3rd July at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms, 61-65 Great Queen Street, London, WC2B 5DA.

THE INNOCENTS is the second in Bridget’s award-winning Variety Palace Mystery Series, now published by Pushkin Vertigo. When a new string of murders tears through London, Minnie and Albert are thrown together once more. Strangely, the crimes seem to link back to a tragedy that took place fourteen years ago, leaving 183 children dead. And given that the incident touched so many people’s lives, everyone is a suspect...

The third in the series, THE SPIRIT GUIDE, will be published by Pushkin Vertigo in April 2026. THE SPIRIT GUIDE sees Minnie and Albert uncovering the dark secrets behind a female-only spiritualist group that purports to help its members commune with deceased loved ones… Bridget is busy working on the fourth series title.

 Praise for THE INNOCENTS

‘Historical crime fiction at its most beguiling.’ – Barry Forshaw, The Financial Times, ‘Best New Crime Books’

‘Walsh, who clearly knows her Victorians, writes with gusto. Whether she’s detailing the sweat, greasepaint and trickery behind theatrical illusion, the bloody savagery of the dog-fighting pit, or the creepily anthropomorphic world of the taxidermy diorama, time past is so vividly evoked that one can almost smell it. Highly recommended.’ – Laura Wilson, The Guardian, ‘The best recent crime and thrillers’

‘In Walsh’s triumphant sequel to THE TUMBLING GIRL… Walsh once again seamlessly combines vivid period detail, clever plotting, and thoughtful characterizations. This series merits a long run.’ – Publishers Weekly, starred review

‘Bridget Walsh does it again – this series has so much personality. THE INNOCENTS is pacy, captivating and accomplished and I loved it. You’d be forgiven for thinking it was book twenty-two and not book two. More Minnie and Albert, please – I miss them already.’ – Emma Styles

‘From the first dramatic and heart-breaking pages to the breathless final scenes, THE INNOCENTS by Bridget Walsh is the superb second novel in the Variety Palace Mysteries series. Victorian crime at its exciting and grittiest best. Don’t miss it’ – Essie Fox, author of THE FASCINATION

 Praise for GRACE

‘A stirring return’ – TV Times, 5-star review

‘Truly nail-biting TV and there were great performances, with Simm as watchable as ever as the shrewd, yet vulnerable Grace… With more to come later this year… I’ll certainly be tuning in.’ – Gwendolyn Smith, The i

‘There is a reason why Peter James’s novels have sold all over the world, and one of the main ones is that… Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is a well-written and believable character… Simm makes for a likeable lead and the atmospheric Brighton setting is well used.’ – Sarah Hughes, The Sunday Telegraph, ‘The Very Best of the Week Ahead’

‘Darkly compelling’ – Tim Oglethorpe, The Daily Mail

‘Simm gives [Roy Grace] a winning sense of humour beneath all the grit… Campbell is smooth foil, playing Branson quietly enough that Simm doesn’t have to be enormous to stand out. Brighton’s mix of pretty shoreline, faded glamour, criminal past and contemporary hipsterism makes it a ripe spot for some murder. The action feels rooted in its setting… It’s almost inconceivable Simm hasn’t already been in a long running franchise… and I expect the wait’s over.’ – Ed Cumming, The Independent

‘Few people do moody, angst-ridden men better than John Simm, who takes on the role of Grace. With so many books in hand, this series could run and run.’ – Prospect Magazine, ‘The best television shows in the UK this April’

‘Simm plays the lead with elegant understatement’ – Mail On Sunday

‘A very effective appetite-whetter… The unpretentious storytelling makes this an easy watch, helmed by the always watchable Simm.’ – The Mail on Sunday, ‘Pick of the Day’

‘Roy Grace doesn’t have any obvious gimmick to mark him out, but he swiftly establishes himself as a solid addition to the Sunday-night pack… Chilling.’ – James Jackson, The Times, ‘Critic’s Choice’
